iLux: A New Treatment for Chronic
Dry Eye Disease
Dry Eye Disease is extremely common, chronic, and progressive. If left untreated, this condition can cause eye discomfort and poor vision throughout the day. In the early stages, dry eye symptoms may be infrequent and therefore tolerable. However, the degenerative disease process can lead to more severe symptoms with minimal relief from eye drops commonly used to moisten the eyes.
More than 80% of dry eye is caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Meibomiam glands are a part of the upper and lower eyelids and produce an oily layer to coat the eyes and prevent the watery layer of tears from evaporating. In Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, the glands are not producing the oily layer properly, tears easily evaporate, and the ocular surface dries out, causing discomfort.
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction occurs when the quality of the oils produced within the glands change. The consistency of the oils change from a quality similar to that of smooth olive oil to margarine butter, and then to cold butter. Once the oils are unable to release from the gland onto the eye surface, dry eyes become chronic, the glands become red and inflamed, and they eventually atrophy and disappear. The eyes have a limited number of meibomian glands, and if the inflamed glands are left untreated, the number of them will decrease, leaving fewer options for improved ocular comfort.
Our office has added the newest FDA-approved treatment device for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, called the iLux. This device uses infrared light to direct heat to the eyelids and then compresses the eyelids to gently push out the melted oils from the blocked glands. This can allow for better oil production within the glands, as well as prevent meibomian gland atrophy for long-term benefits.
We are excited to introduce this advanced technology in our office. Contact us today for an evaluation and to see if you may be a good candidate for this treatment.
